hearing lossAccording to a new landmark research by the researchers from the University of Auckland, New Zealand,  a new potent drug i.e. injection of an agent called ‘ADAC’ has the capability of restoring hearing after noise-induced hearing loss in rats. All it do is activates adenosine receptors in cochlear tissues, which results in recovery of hearing functions.

According to Dr. Srdjan Vlajkovic and his team’s work1 this finding have paved the way for using non-surgical therapies by restoring hearing loss after noise-induced injury. There are a variety of reasons for hearing loss due to noise exposure, which affects almost five percent of the population of a country. This type of hearing loss is often found in military and industrial establishments. Presently this type of treatment offers solution through hearing aids and cochlear implants, but no drug therapy is in use which can repair the damaged inner ear and heal hearing loss.

The researchers were successfully investigated the potential of adenosine amine congener (ADAC) which is a selective A1 adenosine receptor agonist during the treatment of noise induced hearing loss.

The result of the study revealed that hearing can be resorted back within six hours time, if exposed to noise than treatment meted out after 24 hours to noise exposure.  Treatment of hearing loss in this case involved multiple injections of ADAC for five days after exposure to noise. This therapy in the study showed positive results by improving the sensory hair cell survival.  The authors of the study concluded this study point out the role of ADAC in controlling the hearing loss due to noise exposure.
